Are Google and Microsoft about to kill off human podcasting?

AI is still crashing the podcast party. Microsoft’s Copilot is the latest major platform to strut in with its new AI podcasting tool, joining Google’s already established Notebook LM.

So, are we really witnessing the death of the human podcaster?

Let's explore how this shiny new tech might impact on this still evolving space.

Companies mentioned in this episode:

  • Microsoft
  • Google

Transcript
Speaker A:

AI is everywhere right now.

Speaker A:

It's writing long form articles, creating realistic images, and now it's even hosting podcasts.

Speaker A:

Microsoft's Copilot is the latest platform to start experimenting with generating conversational podcasts using AI.

Speaker A:

Simply feed it your topic and it creates an audio dialogue between two synthetic hosts.

Speaker A:

Listeners can even pause to ask questions, making the podcasts interactive.

Speaker A:

But let's be clear, this isn't exactly groundbreaking.

Speaker A:

Google has offered a similar feature for ages now with its Notebook LM feature, so Microsoft's Copilot isn't really pioneering new territory here.

Speaker A:

Plus, many podcast directories are actively banning AI generated content because it lacks genuine human connection.

Speaker A:

Real podcasting thrives on authenticity and storytelling, which is something AI still struggles to replicate convincingly.

Speaker A:

Early adopters, especially businesses aiming for multilingual content, might find Copilot useful, but for independent podcasters whose value lies in their unique storytelling and personal touch, AI generated content will be a total bust.

Speaker A:

AI podcasting raises important questions though, such as will this technology eventually replace the human element, or is this just another robotic gimmick?

Speaker A:

What do you think?

Speaker A:

Revolutionary or redundant?

Podmastery: podcasting insights and advice for indie creators
Helping you to attain 'podmastery'
Are you a podcaster who's looking to improve and grow your podcast? You're in the right place. Together, we'll help you attain 'podmastery'.
I'm Neal Veglio, a veteran podcaster who first started dabbling with RSS in the early 2000s.
Podcasting is such a complex medium, with so many factors that can impact your success. It's my goal to cover all these topics with you, and help you maximise the results you're getting from your efforts.
And while my shows now enjoy thousands of listeners every single week, it wasn't always easy.
When I took a career break from radio for a few years in 2007, I had to learn how to build audience without the lift of an FM frequency.
I learned a lot from that experience.
I now help other podcasters to achieve their goals.
Each episode, I'll be offering you some insights into what I've done and what I've helped my podcasting agency clients to do with all our podcasts in the hope we can help YOU increase your podcast's chances of becoming more successful!
And ensuring you can avoid the dreaded 'podfade'!

Neal Veglio

As the UK's longest serving podcaster (having started in 2001 before it was even known as a 'thing') I've seen a lot of changes to the industry. Having launched more than 100 podcasts over the years, I help brands and entrepreneurs to get their marketing messaging out 'in the wild', but in a compelling, not boring way.
